Breaking Point (Waves) Series

Breaking Point is a contemplation on life, what waves can teach us. For as long as I can remember I’ve had a fascination with the ocean, spent hours watching waves – and always regained a sense of tranquility spending time by the water no matter what. On one of those days when once again I just sat and observed, it struck me how similar the ebb and flow of waves are to our lives.

The reaching, the desire for something, the build up – which inevitable has to come to a halt – a breaking or tipping point – but rather than diminish in those moments when things fall apart, to actually trust and realize it is by no means an end, but an opportunity to start over, and simply allow the flow to happen, to never give up.

Rising Phoenix Series & Into The West Series

Rising Phoenix Series & Into The West Series

Three years ago, I started working on “Rising Phoenix” (not shown here) – a series of self-portraits to metaphorically depict the different stages of recovery from my more than two and a half year journey in rehab overcoming a double brain injury from a near fatal bicycle crash in 2017. For this, I sought out the remote landscapes of the West, untouched places , to find the necessary solitude and privacy for working on this series. The human figure blending into, becoming one with nature - this surrendering to the situation, making myself vulnerable - was also a significant element of my actual rehabilitation.

Spending time in these still but so vibrantly alive spaces had a profound effect on me. The silence, healing power, and beauty, deeply touched me – and I attempted to capture the spirit, the emotion, and often the sensuality of a place. Inadvertently, I started creating a second series - “Into The West”. Not in the traditional sense of classic landscape photography, predominantly a domain of male photographers, but following in the footsteps of two pioneering female artists from the last century, whose spirit and work has been a great influence on me and my work. Georgia O’Keeffe in her paintings, her abstraction and use of color, and Anne Brigman, in her photography often depicting herself in the wilderness of the Sierra Nevada. These two statements from said artists ring particularly true for me:

"Filling a space in a beautiful way - that is what art means to me. My painting is what I have to give back to the world for what the world gives to me." Georgia O'Keeffe

Fear is the great chain which binds women and prevents their development, and fear is the one apparently big thing which has no foundation in life.” Anne Brigman

Abstract Architecture Series

The abstract architecture series is about bending preconceptions, stating the obvious in a new, unseen way. Appreciating the interaction between space and light, and how one is essential to the other – looking for these moments is an attempt to depict the movement, the fluidity of something normally perceived as static or rigid, the interdependence of opposites, of contradictions.
